“We must not, however, imagine that still life is inconsequential or trivial. Composers work out ideas in string quartets-Beethoven’s and Bartok’s experimental forms for discovering what can be done with harmonies and tempi-that have become masterpieces. There are artists like Chardin and Braque for whom still life was their major form of expression, as there are poets who have excelled only in the sonnet and the short lyric.“

THE DAVENPORT READER

_Guy DAVENPORT

READ DAVENPORT

Guy Davenport was a writer, translator, illustrator, teacher, and scholar. He is best known for his modernist-style short stories, but his range of works is wide. He was a professor of English, having taught most of his life at the University of Kentucky. Davenport published over 40 books, among them collections of short stories, translations from the Greek, illustrated works, a novel, and critical studies on literature, culture, and art. He often joked that he had only 13 readers, but he also asserted that he didn’t write “for scholars or fellow critics, but for people who like to read, to look at pictures, and to know things.”

CLUMSY: the ART of Letting GO of the HAND in ART & Craft
클럼지: 예술과 공예에서 기교를 내려놓는 기술에 관하여

This book will discuss the tradition of losing the “hand” in the art and craft both in the East and the West. It will primarily focus on the esthetics of Asian ceramics and calligraphy, and the aspects of Modern and Contemporary art in the West.

이 책에서는 동양과 서양 모두에서 기교를 버리는 전통에 관하여 논의할 것이다. 주로 동양의 도자기, 서예의 미학과 태도, 그리고 서구의 현대미술과 동시대 미술의 어떤 측면을 중심으로 살펴볼 것이다.

MAHK

_Byungsoo CHO

READ CHO

Byoungsoo Cho captures the features of Korean beauty from the perspective of ‘ aesthetics of mak(roughness).’ The coincidental display found in Korean traditional architecture. The imperfect nature of mahksabal(meaning roughly-made bowl) deriving from the slight shaking of the potter’s hands. The nonchalant airs expressed by a Buddhist monk’s dance. Cho states that we can abbreviate the characteristics of our Korean aesthetics which consists of stirring up emotional resonance instead of setting a clear form at, and the traits of spontaneity or genuineness, all of this into a one-syllable word ‘mahk’ meaning roughness.
