 Interview with 박카로 Parkkaro
by 클럼지 Clumsy
Translation by 송효정 Irene Song

PARKKARO, can you tell us about your first tattoo experience?

My first was a needle tattoo around the age of 15. When I was still a student who was very interested in tattoos, I attempted them without any knowledge. By heating the needle on fire and dipping it in ink (at the time, I had the naive idea that anything would be disinfected if it was heated on fire). However, I stopped the process without finishing it, and eventually covered it up with other tattoos. On the same day, I engraved my friend’s name on their foot in Chinese letters, using the same needle method. I stopped my tattoo in the middle (the pain probably infringed on my objectivity) but I finished my friend’s. Of course, after some time, I did the coverup for this clumsy needle tattoo.

Where do you get your inspiration for tattoo designs? Tell us about your work process.

I enjoy daydreaming. I call this a “voyage,” which would lead me to unpredictable places. I list the things I imagine within this state on a notepad. When I have enough “mass” of notes to work on, I start to organize it by drawing. The time it takes to imagine and compose this text takes a bit longer than the actual drawing process.

Why have humans constantly been getting tattoos?

As long as there is a visual medium, we are obsessed with image. The power of images could indicate both status and threat. And as a male peacock opens its tail to attract females, tattoos have a role similar to that of cosmetics. And it also gives a sense of belonging, the desire to follow a trend. Just as there are trendy clothing styles, there are also trendy tattoos.

What do you think is tattoo?

The skin is a kind of screen. Everyone has their own screen, and I think tattoos are what is projected upon this screen. Idiosyncrasies and tastes of the person might be reflected; the possibilities are endless. So it is important to protect your own screen. If it is an expansion of your “self”, a display that imitates or is conscious of others will limit its potential.

You work on other things beside tattoos. What kinds of work are you currently doing, and what is their connection to tattooing?

My ideas are primarily organized in text. The media is determined in the stage of “how to implement it”. Usually, the media is chosen according to the idea. I enjoy works in which I can use diverse media. I mainly do installation work, because I like the concepts of experimental contemporary art. I want to further expand upon available media.

In high school I concentrated in digital design, worked with ceramics, and majored in art theory during college. Recently, I studied sound, and learned silver crafts to make accessories. If we’re talking about the connection between these various works and tattoos, it is that everything that can reflect your thoughts is a tool.

I want to go through as many diverse occupations as possible. Being a carpenter is on my bucket list.

Tattooing is an act of engraving an indelible image on another person. Have you ever thought that “I ultimately want to engrave a certain kind of image”?

As I mentioned earlier, the skin is a kind of screen. I think each screen shines brighter when the individual’s unique view of the world is reflected upon it. Therefore I hold consultation with customers as highly important, and focus on collecting their stories as material.

I think the role of the tattooist is the convergence between shaman and doctor, based on my belief in science-based medicine and the occult effects of shamanism. So the tattoo procedure first relies on the trust of medicine, then on the belief in the world of spirit. I pursue work that infuses magical meaning based on scientific knowledge, and ultimately embodies humanities, using scientific and mathematical subject matter in its design.
