This large installation comes directly out of a series of photographs that I began taking at the beginning of covid lockdowns during March 2020. In order to be closer to family during that uncertain time, my partner and I left our home and studio in the Hudson Valley, NY and moved into an apartment near my parents with little access to outdoor space. I began walking the surrounding neighborhoods everyday, sometimes for hours. With no one around, I started taking straight forward and even deadpan photographs of homes, yards, plantings, fences, property lines and borders.

These photographs highlight an in-between space – an attempt to define space and privacy while also playing the role of nature in a fabricated system. Control slides into chaos, nature disregards structure, symmetry becomes unattainable. The edges are constantly fraying. I was thinking about care and neglect, life and death, preservation and inattention, access and denial, foreground and background, real and fake, systems and irregularities – home as a construct. These landscapes are extreme and yet completely ordinary constructions of reality.

These photographs are a direct result of my situation during and reflection of the pandemic, contemplating narratives and realities that I couldn’t see – seemingly unconnected to me but affecting all of us. The buildings, while operating as individual bubbles, remain tethered to the world by power lines and resemblances to their neighbors. Previously unrealized connections were revealed – everything is connected.

The installation at the Held Foundation is a floating box, an implied shelter with holes, gaps, spaces and vulnerabilities. The structure is situated on a slope with the ground dropping out from under the floor; the bottom edges of the slabs defining the bottom of the box, with the horizontal slab in the center marking the floor, but also becoming a table, chair, or bed as the ground slips away underneath. Perceptions shift depending on where we stand.

The structure is inverted. The interior is built up using shingles, a language of the outer protective skin of houses. Ceramic parts referencing everyday domestic objects hang all around the outer surfaces of the slabs, turning the structure/home/shelter inside out. The walls and floors are permeable; there is no roof. The structure is connected to its surroundings, and its surroundings are encroaching on the structure.

The materials are simple, things that we come into contact with everyday – wood and clay. I use wood because it is simultaneously a natural material, found material, cropped material, and man made material. The clay is low fired and vulnerable to water and weather, with the metals and minerals in some of the clay bodies oxidizing and turning colors over the course of the exhibition. The structure is meant to weather quickly – to become a quick ruin, to be affected by the environment around it. Similarly, the environment immediately surrounding the structure has been affected by the structure itself, with the grass underneath giving way to mosses as a result of the shadows from the large slabs.
