Kintsugi is a gesture of revival. As a doctor joins a broken bone and stitches a cut, Sumi Kim mends a broken plate and fills the chip of a bowl leaving beautiful scars on them. Scar is a vestige of survival of what could have been fatal. If life is precious, so is the scar.

Kintsugi is known as a way to repair broken bowls or daily items.
We are curious about the history of Kintsugi, and its beginnings.

There are several theories about the origin of Kintsugi. The most well-known tale is that Yoshimasa Ashikaga, a Japanese shogun, broke his beloved tea bowl and sent it to China for repair, but was so greatly disappointed with the shoddy outcome that he ordered Japanese artisans to devise better methods of repair. So Kintsugi began when lacquer artisans repaired the bowl using lacquer, bengara pigments, and gold powder. The method was named Kintsugi, which means “repairing with gold, connecting with gold”, and because ceramics were valuable in Japan, the repair technique and ceramics of Kintsugi were passed down from generation to generation.

In Korea, there are phrases like “doja soobok” (ceramic recovery) in old literature and records of the techniques that remain, but Kintsugi was not passed down further because pottery was considered more common and mundane there than in Japan, and it was believed to be ominous to use broken bowls.

How did you start Kintsugi?

I didn’t major in ceramics. In college, I started pottery after I saw a photo of ceramicist Lucie Rie with pottery by Bonchang Koo. I liked Rie’s work, but I also started learning because I wanted to become an admirable senior like her. Since I was not a ceramics major, I had the desire to make large works for no reason. I made big vases, but I was frustrated that these painstakingly-made structures often broke during the firing process or couldn’t be used. Typically ceramicists just break them, but I thought that’d be a waste. Then, an acquaintance informed me that there was a repair method called Kintsugi in Japan. I got curious about this idea of reattaching the broken, so I went to Kyoto to learn it.

In Kyoto, I started learning Kintsugi at the house of a teacher whom the acquaintance introduced to me. It was my first time learning a foreign language, so when I took photos and made notes, the teacher said, “don’t write it down, but remember it with your body and hands.” That’s how I started learning it step by step, from kani Kintsugi to hon Kintsugi.

    "Kintsugi

Briefly introduce how to repair with Kintsugi.

Kintsugi is a type of lacquer craft, a method of repair using lacquer. Lacquer is called urushi(漆) in Japanese, and the repair is done by mixing various materials with lacquer. I will briefly explain the hon(本) Kintsugi process.

1.Attach broken particles with mugi urushi(麦漆) mixed with flour or rice paste with lacquer.
2.Fill in the part that has been removed with sabiurushi(錆漆) mixed with lacquer and charcoal.
3.Attach the objects and place the filled part with yellowish brown tameurushi(溜め漆) and red bengaraurushi(弁柄漆) lacquer.
4.Finish with a makie(蒔絵), which is to put gold powder on the lacquered area.

The traditional way is called hon(本)Kintsugi. The advantage of this method is that the ware’s stability is high because natural ingredients such as organic lacquer, filling powder, wood flour, stone dust, bengara pigments, pure gold, and pure silver are used. The disadvantage is that it poses a risk of triggering lacquer allergies, which causes itching and pain with no development of immunity. kani(簡易)Kintsugi is a modern method. Natural lacquer is used to reduce toxicity and harden the ware quickly through stirring. The disadvantage is that the ware stability is weak, because there are chemical products in the instantaneous adhesives and epoxy putties that are used. The advantage lies in that the overall working time is accelerated due to shorter curing times for lacquer, and the lacquer does not rise. These days, there’s a new trend where ceramicists have been combining the methods of hon Kintsugi and kan Kintsugi.

Other than bowls and ceramics, is there anything else that can be repaired with Kintsugi?

The physical properties of lacquer are very interesting. When it hardens, it becomes very solid. You can attach leather, paper, wood, glass, and of course ceramics. However, it requires ample time for the lacquer to harden. It may take about 1 to 2 months to cure, or depending on the work, 6 months to a whole year. Lacquer is sensitive to temperature and humidity, so you have to maintain a temperature of 22 degrees or higher and a humidity of 60% or more. So in the winter, I pay close attention to the heating in the studio and turn on two to three humidifiers.

How is the durability of the repaired object compared to before?

Many people are curious about this, but I don’t think using Kintsugi guarantees a permanent fix. When a ceramic piece receives physical shock, the same broken parts can break, and something that breaks is bound to break again anyhow. I believe Kintsugi is not a permanent treatment, but rather filling a spot and covering it with gold. It depends on how you use it, but some people wash the repaired item and put it in the dishwasher. It’s best not to do that, and even if it gets damaged again, I tell students not to despair, and to just restore it for use. We can always just repair it again, since we learned and know how to.

These days, interest in the environment and recycling is prevalent, so an interest in Kintsugi also seems to be increasing. What do you think about this?

As I spend more time at home due to COVID-19, expanding my awareness of the environment and recycling, I believe that my own interest in Kintsugi has increased. Glazed bowls have a glassy texture, so they are difficult to break for reuse, and are usually discarded as waste. In that sense, it’s a good thing to revive broken things through Kintsugi. The materials for Hon Kintsugi are all from nature. When I first learned Kintsugi, I filtered out sawdust onto a tray and used it as wood flour, and if clay tools were needed, I cut bamboo to the right size for use. It’s rough so this grass called madicho with a grit of about 1,500 is used as a substitute for sandpaper. It’s good to revive wares, but I think hon Kintsugi is great in particular because it uses natural ingredients.

“
It’s hard to do Kintsugi while thinking about something else. As soon as a stray thought comes into my mind, it appears in the Kintsugi.

    "킨츠키_11"
Even the most trivial items that are repaired and used for a long time often contain stories, and when they have traces of repair and history, I think they become unique objects. Then, can the value of such objects rise?

This happened at my friend’s house when I was in Japan. When I first went over, my friend’s mother said that in Japan, when a cherished guest arrives, it is customary to offer tea in a precious cup. Then she served me tea in a cup repaired with Kintsugi. I assumed it was because she knew I was studying Kintsugi, but she told me that it was actually a cup that she wanted to preserve to the point where she had it repaired. When I heard this, I realized that this cup was not valuable because it was repaired with Kintsugi, but because it was deemed so valuable as to be worth repairing with Kintsugi. It was to welcome a guest with a precious cup, rather than because I was doing Kintsugi. Doing Kintsugi is not to attach a new worth to objects, but rather to remember their inherent value.

I am curious whether you have an item with a memorable story behind it, or if you know of such an item (even if owned by someone else)?

In the past, I had an exhibition where I repaired objects with backstories. Someone requested the repair for a rather large bowl, and said it had been in his home since childhood. It’s a bowl that their parents’ friends personally made and gifted to them, but now the people who made it and his parents have all passed away. He said he was so upset when the bowl suddenly broke. As this was before he knew about Kintsugi, he had hastily glued it back together, but he always felt bothered by how it looked afterwards, and then he contacted me when he decided he finally wanted to have it repaired properly. I had also been searching for objects with stories at the time for my exhibition, so I repaired it for him. The bowl has now been returned to the home of the person who requested the work, and has been naturally settling into place there.
    "Kintsugi
Do you make independent work outside of classes? If it’s repair work it would be eventually returned to someone else, but are there any that you keep for yourself?

I do a lot of personal work outside of classes. If you take a lot of classes, you don’t complete work alone, so you might lose the sense of holding a brush by hand, and later it becomes difficult to hold the brush properly. When I get a personal repair request and take a long break from my own work, I try to maintain the strength of using the brush by drawing lines as practice.

Recently, someone requested me to do some glass repair. It was an early work by Kyunghee Shin, so the glaze was not in a good condition. It was difficult to repair, but I finished it with great care, and wrapped it up in cloth. I don’t know what came over me, but I ended up dropping it. The fixed glass was shattered again. When I told the person who requested the repair what happened, he actually was very understanding and said owning the piece was probably not meant to be. He said it would be better to get a new glass work anyway, because even if it was repaired perfectly, he wouldn’t have been satisfied. I bought the broken glass from him and am repairing it now. To me, this glass is a reminder to self-reflect, and I want to keep it for the rest of my life so I’ll finish repairing it somehow and show you at my next solo exhibition.

When implementing Kintsugi, what aspects do you keep in mind regarding its form (materials, colors, patterns)?

When you look at an over-repaired Kintsugi job, it doesn’t look good but rather stuffy. Since the purpose of Kintsugi is to repair for use, it is correct to fill and coat the broken parts, but when done in excess, it can obscure the original form. Even in class, I tell students to block the parts that need to be blocked, but preserve the beauty of space by showing that the work has wounds. I believe that imperfect beauty, as revealed by naturally enhancing the damaged parts of the work, should be applied to Kintsugi.

What does Kintsugi mean to you?

It’s hard to do Kintsugi while thinking about something else. As soon as a stray thought comes into my mind, it appears in the Kintsugi. It’s also related to physical condition, so on days when I’m not in a good state, the lines come out unstable. I used to be able to tell exactly how to repair something after looking at the object, but since I’ve been working a lot these days, I think this ability has declined a bit recently. There is data accumulated from experience, but there are parts that are made visible by intuition. In this case, there is no way but for me to practice over and over again, focusing on my work. When I wanted to find something that I could focus on, I started yoga and Kintsugi around the same time. They were similar in that they both require continuous practice and performance, and this fit me very well. I think Kintsugi is to repeat, so I think of myself as a trainee of repetition.

It’s good to teach someone quality skills, but the more important thing is to change my own self in the direction that I like while doing Kintsugi. I don’t have a huge philosophy around it yet, but because it’s something I started because I enjoyed it, I hope to continue with the art of Kintsugi for the rest of my life.
    "Kintsugi
킨츠키는 깨진 그릇이나 일상용품을 수리하는 방법으로 알고 있습니다.
