\n\tApple Box Objects<\/b><\/p>\n
The Apple Box Objects project was born from the fundamental thoughts and preoccupations that have guided the practice of my architecture over the past 20 years. The essay written below ‘Thoughts on the Apple Box’ from 1994 conveys the conceptual background of this project.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t
The 30x60x30cm Apple Box continuously stages a spatial dialogue with its viewer. It begins a conversation, silently responding to the scale and posture of the human body, at times as individual objects, and in other moments, as clustered assemblies or as randomly scattered pieces.<\/p>\n
This conversation involves the inherent properties of the Apple Box, each conveying a sense of both invitation and confrontation of space. At times, the Apple Box reveals itself more poetically in dialogue with materials of a completely foreign nature, such as glass, paint, or another object.<\/p>\n
For example, a thin layer of glass covering a crudely made Apple Box often reflects light and the image of its surroundings. However, in other moments, the glass allows the image of the surrounding space to suspend over the dark, hollow cavern beneath.<\/p>\n
If the roughness of the box were to speak for our current conditions, the glass indicates a medium that channels what we perceive, feel, and understand in our contemporary society. With other words, the same light and reflection can bring about a spectrum of experiences, depending on the weather, our mood, and our movement.<\/p>\n
In the ‘Nine-Piece Apple Box’, the juxtaposition of the image and the Apple Box creates a ‘third kind of relationship’ and threads a continuous spatial experience through the nine independent objects.<\/p>\n
Through these series of experiments, the attempt is not only to reveal the beauty inherent in the space and materiality of the Apple Box itself. As the contrasting materiality of glass and apple box may show, I seek to introduce a method by which we may channel the beauty in this world.\u00a0<\/p>\n\t
Thoughts on the Apple Box The Apple Box made of Wood<\/strong> The reason that the box appears to be even more beautiful is probably its utility and its material of humble pinewood panels that surround the space within. Such a beauty does not stem from a classical understanding of visual proportions such as the golden ratio. The beauty comes from the ‘generosity’ one feels from a filled box and the ‘spaciousness’ from an empty one. More than just a visual pleasure, it is a pleasure emanating from the ease one feels of the spaciousness and utility of the box as well as for the well-fitting material.<\/p>\n\t The rectangular Box grounded in Earth<\/strong> For a long time, I have dreamt of a materialistic architecture like an apple box laid on the ground – a rectangular wooden box placed in the soil of the bare ground. If it is large enough for a person to get in and sit, I will enter the box to meet with a friend, perhaps under a night sky with stars that shine brilliantly like ice, to speak of many things with the language of silence. Steel Mass in Earth The steel mass in the earth will probably have a considerable weight. Steel mass is different from wood; it is heavy and has a long life, but its surface deteriorates with exposure to air, wind, and water. The space that the earth and the steel mass create is also limited to be within a rectangular shape. However, the form loses its visual expression, and the place becomes magnified through its relationship between ‘material’ and ‘nature’.<\/p>\n Two Rectangular Boxes placed on the Earth Between two rectangular boxes, there exists an experience. Our bodies move relative to the boxes and experience the relationship between the two, while the whip of the wind and the rays of sunlight is felt on our skin, and a stimulating feeling of passing by appears. The two boxes generate a reflection of life conditions; respecting, looking, missing, experiencing, realizing one another, and society and the development of culture.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t The Band that ties the Three Apple Boxes<\/strong> I tie together three boxes with ‘Our’\u00a0(Woori)\u00a0<\/i>band. Through this band, the boxes connect and begin to share the experience of one unified box. The goal of the\u00a0Woori\u00a0<\/i>band is to create new relationships within the box – a relationship linking the boxes themselves, or linking the\u00a0Woori<\/i>\u00a0band with all three boxes.<\/p>\n I come to understand the\u00a0Woori<\/i>\u00a0band and purpose through examining the relationship between the boxes and nature, the boxes and boxes, the boxes with people, and people with people.\u00a0Woori (We)\u00a0<\/i>live together with nature.\u00a0Woori (We)\u00a0<\/i>live together with people.\u00a0Woori (We)\u00a0<\/i>realize the boundaries and complexities of the band itself.<\/p>\n It is through the\u00a0Woori<\/i>\u00a0band that each box comes to recognize itself,\u00a0\u00a0and the new tension holding them together.\u00a0<\/p>\n My goal with the connecting boxes is not to separate us from the environment, but rather to provide a framework through which one can clearly see the surroundings, and begin to understand where we stand.\u00a0<\/p>\n I am moved by the purity and restrained character of an empty apple box, yet I also notice the practicality and efficiency of the box. As light and wind passes through the gap in the wooden boards, I am able to appreciate all aspects of the box itself.\u00a0<\/p>\n For me, the apple boxes provide an opportunity to establish the concept of\u00a0Woori\u00a0<\/i>(us). As the boxes link and connect together through the\u00a0Woori<\/i>\u00a0band, I am given the opportunity to speak on the relationship one has with the environment and
