Text by Mimi Park 박상미

In 1969, R.B. Kitaj made a series of prints called In Our Time. All of them are images of book covers. In the early 60’s, Andy Warhol started his silkscreen productions of dollar bills and soup cans, so we can say that Kitaj created his own version after Warhol. The book covers used for the series were from his own library, which he called, in fact, “My soup cans, my Liz, my electric chair.”

R. They had literary and auto-biographical references. If Warhol went after sameness and meaninglessness, what Kitaj did was quite the opposite. These books meant a lot to him, the blown-up book covers with texts acquired even more meaning, and each image had an irreplaceable aura that was made in Kitaj’s own hands. These shapes are formed or deformed over time in one’s library, not manufactured by a factory machine like a soup can. Kitaj, one of the greatest draftsmen in the history of art, focused on doing this for a while. The prints were not part of his usual practice but they are the key to understanding his oeuvre, his life.

On his book covers, there are texts, of course, including book titles, names of the authors, publishers and even blurbs. If we think of all the rectangles created in art history, we can see at what point, Kitaj made a certain kind of rectangles. His rectangles give nice contrast to the ones of Malevich, for example. Kitaj’s are imperfect geometries, and representations that are realer than real. Malevich said he “sought refuge in the form of the square.” Kitaj might have done the same for a different reason.

Permit Me Voyage is a poetry book by James Agee. His lifetime subject and the origin of his malaise was the fact that he was a Jew, and the identity of the Jewish is rooted in their journey to their Promised Land. Kitaj was an American expat living in England, where the discrimination of the Jewish was quite harsh. He was a lost soul where he actually stayed. His beloved wife, Sandra, died from shock after he got atrocious reviews of his exhibition at Tate Gallery. He never recovered from his wife’s death.

I might have thought of my own journey when I first saw this work.
