\n\tFarawayAs I drove up north, the earth was getting redder. I was on the way up from Santa Fe to Ghost Ranch and Abiqui\u00fa where Georgia O’Keeffe had lived. How visceral the land can look, I was amazed. It looked like flushed flesh right before bleeding. It was also so rough that it was as if I was looking inside the land that had been overturned. Red earth, occasional greens, blue skies and white clouds… the world was filled with intense colors almost blinding the eye. I suddenly had an urge to look at O’Keeffe’s paintings again. I also got curious about her as a person and the sensuality found in her paintings. Who on earth was she? What kind of a person could live in such a barren place?<\/p>\n
I am reminded of a spectacular nightmare on the day I arrived in Santa Fe when I think of the trip. It was like Park Chan-wook’s version of <The Death of Sardanapalus> by Delacroix. In my atrocious dream, the arms and legs of humans were cut off and there was blood everywhere. I had this dream, to be exact, about 30km from Santa Fe, in Los Cerrillos, a desert village in the middle of nowhere between Santa Fe and Albuquerque.(It is in Santa Fe County.) As you drive on the highway from Albuquerque and turn into curvy mountain roads, you can suddenly see the dry climate landscape and the sky being moody, changing every minute. It was much more confusing than I had thought to find the B&B where I reserved a room. The closer I got to the destination, the less things I noticed other than weeds and rocks; it was difficult to keep up my sense of orientation. When I carefully followed the small signs among the bushes and arrived at last, it was surreal to see that the adobe style house was actually sitting there in the desert. When I was surfing the Internet to reserve a place, I had been talking to myself like a kid, “I want to sleep in the desert. I want to try and experience it.” There I was, finally, in the desert, in the middle of nowhere. But it was too shocking an experience that there was nothing around the house I had to sleep in that night. It was on high ground and the air was dry. The woman at the B&B who had awkwardly welcomed us had a face weathered by dry and cold air for a long time. Her skin looked tough and pure as if it had been peeled several times, and her eyes were blue and distanced. At night, I could hear animals’ cries. I heard later that they were coyotes, but it sounded like a child’s cry who was about to be eaten by an animal, not an animal’s cry. That night in my dream, cut arms and legs were flying about and the owner had seduced the guests and revealed herself to be the devil who eats them up. I woke up to a sleep paralysis; I could not shoo away those horrible images and fear I had for quite a while. The dry air, the altitude, the ever changing atmospheric pressure, animals’ cries, and the woman who felt so distant, all of this must have caused my nightmare. I had come to a place that is known for its toughness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t Richard Tuttle, who has lived in New Mexico(and in New York), had once said that in order to live here, any plant or animal has to draw something ‘tough’ from itself. He wanted to see the kind of toughness that he could draw from himself, he said. Did O’Keeffe feel the same? As Aix-en-Provence reminds you of C\u00e9zanne, so does Santa Fe of O’Keeffe. She had spent time in New Mexico every year during 20 years before she permanently moved there in 1949, living there until the day she passed in 1986. Whatever the reason was, what O’Keeffe said about the place sounds more romantic. In an interview she had in her late years, she said, “When I got to New Mexico, I thought it was mine. As soon as I saw it, that was my country […] It’s something that’s in the air, it’s just different. […] I shouldn’t say too much about it because other people may be interested and I don’t want them to be interested.”<\/p>\n Georgia O’Keeffe Museum is in Santa Fe but she had actually lived in Ghost Ranch and Abiqui\u00fa. Abiqui\u00fa is about 80 km north of Santa Fe, and Ghost Ranch is a little bit farther north. When O’Keeffe visited Ghost Ranch for the first time in 1934, she exclaimed, “To me it is the best place in the world.” Though this trip was initially planned with her in my mind, I was never a huge fan of her paintings. When her paintings are hung side by side with Arthur Dove’s, I would always give a closer look at Dove’s paintings. But the landscape of the place she had chosen to live was magnificent, not something to be overlooked. Ghost Ranch is currently an education and retreat center but it is known to have been a place where rustlers would hide stolen cattle. The rustlers spread the rumor that it is haunted with ghosts so that people would not come near it, and hence the name. Later on, a philanthropist bought the ranch and donated it to the Presbyterian Church, and O’Keeffe could buy a small piece of land. I sat inside the small cabin where she stayed and painted, and looked at the landscape that has been formed for over 200 million years. I thought to myself, perhaps her paintings were a mere part of the large personality that makes O’Keeffe. Once a critic had said that what the artist creates is the artist himself\/herself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t Georgia O’Keeffe was born in 1887 in the town of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, to farmer parents. As a child she had already shown artistic talent and decided to become an artist but at the time it was very rare that a woman could become one. As in Europe or in the States, mostly artists were men and in such an environment, it was also a man who had discovered her talent. Alfred Stieglitz, who was running his avant-garde gallery in New York called 291 gallery, had first seen O’Keeffe’s drawings in 1916. Upon seeing her charcoal drawings he exclaimed, “At last, a woman on paper!” It meant two things; the first being that amid the art world where only men exist, there finally appeared a female artist, and secondly, about the subject of her works; her flower paintings conjure up the image of a woman’s genitals. (O’Keeffe was included as one of the symbolic guests who are represented in vulva forms on dinner plates in Judy Chicago’s ‘The Dinner Party’.)\u00a0It is quite surprising that the abstract drawing that had been made before her era of her flower paintings also had something that reminded the viewer of a ‘woman.’ Stieglitz had remarked that a certain femininity which had never been expressed before was finally expressed on paper.<\/p>\n Right next year in 1917, Stieglitz had given O’Keeffe her first solo exhibition, which was quite a rule-breaker at the time. And just after 3 days, the U.S. declared war against Germany. This threw Stieglitz into financial woes, and upon renouncing the renewal of contract renewal for the gallery, he announced he’s finished but he gave the world a woman. During this time, passionate letters were sent to each other. In a year, the couple with 23 years of age difference began to live together, and Stieglitz’s statement became all the more true in a couple of years. In 1921, Stieglitz had his photography exhibition which showed a series of portraits of O’Keeffe; her impressive fingers holding the coat collar in one; only in a nightgown with her disheveled hair in another; and nude. Some of them were of her on the bed after having made love in broad daylight. It was clear that Stieglitz had given the woman to this world, even presented the woman he passionately loved “with her whole body.” And so O’Keeffe had become the famous “woman” in the history of modern art in America. She was a rare woman with a man’s profession, a woman who continuously painted images reminding us of the vulva,(She denied such interpretation her whole life.) she was the woman of Stieglitz who was a celebrity in the art circle, (Stieglitz’s divorce took a long time so O’Keeffe had to live with him in the state of adultery until 1924 when they finally married.) and a woman who could show her naked body to the public. As O’Keeffe had to be all these ‘women,’ she was in pain. But she grew famous and such fame helped the sale of her works. O’Keeffe as an artist sprang with all these facts and was linked to them. Owing to the fact that her works were abstract but not based on cubism, and that she painted the landscapes of New Mexico while living there, the adjective “American” would be sometimes added to “woman.”<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t Mabel Dodge Luhan who had invited O’Keeffe for the first time to Taos, New Mexico, also had said the land is like the beginning of the world. O’Keeffe frequented this place right after Stieglitz had an affair with a new girlfriend, Dorothy Norman. She was young and pretty, filled with awe of him. In fact, Stieglitz would have well gotten used to living a life like Pygmalion’s. Before O’Keeffe, he had discovered a young female artist Pamela Colman Smith and became her mentor and promoted her career. O’Keeffe was a much more successful case, and then it was Norman’s turn. As she was an affluent businessman’s wife, she became a disciple of Stieglitz and even his financial supporter. For an aging Pygmalion, she must have been a woman he did not want to give up. But he did not divorce O’Keeffe until his death while he kept his relationship with Norman.<\/p>\n They say in a wedding in Ancient Rome, the bride would shake the bridegroom’s hand and say, “I would be Gaia where you become Gaius.” Gaia is the goddess of land. It sounds like a riddle but one can presume that the union of man and woman is related to a place. O’Keeffe did not stay with her husband, and Stieglitz never visited her in New Mexico. It was as if O’Keeffe chose this land upon renouncing her love for Stieglitz. It is known that she went out to the desert every morning in New Mexico. She would paint after returning with her memory of the landscapes, and she would exclaim how the hills would be so soft, a genuinely marvelous land and how she sometimes wanted to take her clothes off and lie down on the hill naked. This act of leaning one’s whole existence on the corporal intimacy, is it not love?<\/p>\n The strata of Ghost Ranch were formed by the earth of the Triassic period 200 million years ago and of the Jurassic period 150 million years ago. After Stieglitz’s death, O’Keeffe moved to this aged land permanently. There were many artists living nearby but she didn’t mingle with them, and neither with the art circle of New York. Faraway by herself, she would paint and grow old like the earth. O’Keeffe’s older face in the photo looks beautiful with her deep wrinkles. Perhaps, her face in person could have had the distant expression with the dry wind from the earth blowing on it. From O’Keeffe’s Abiqui\u00fa house, Pedernal Mountain could be seen afar. She often said, “It’s my private mountain. It belongs to me.” This mountain was sacred for the Navajo natives since they believed it was the birthplace of ‘the woman who makes changes,’ which symbolizes the land and time. O’Keeffe lived up to be 98, and when she passed her body was cremated according to her will, her remains scattered on the top of the Pedernal Mountain.
