Scholars are still divided as to what made the first human ancestors walk upright. It is difficult to prove which came first; for example, whether using tools allowed them to stand upright, or whether the upright posture freed the hand to use tools. However, there are hardly any disagreements on the advantages (or disadvantages) of bipedalism. One advantage is that walking upright encourages more effective human body movement. Although bipedal walking is slower than quadrupedal walking, it has the great advantage of allowing the body to use energy efficiently. (Hadn’t someone said life is a long-distance race?) It also made it easier to protect our bodies from strong sunlight or heated ground, and the wider field of sight enabled us to see farther. The reason that Australopithecus, the ancestors of mankind that originated in East Africa, was able to successfully evolve into present humans, was because they were able to travel and leave the African continent, going on a long journey to find other continents. It would be fair to say that it is the mobility made possible by upright walking that the human race owes its existence to.

Humans were constantly in motion and evolved to move about. Humans began walking upright 3 million years ago, and agriculture began 10,000 years ago. The automobile was invented at the end of the 19th century, and it was only 100 years ago that the office work which made people sit all day at desks began to appear. In Korea, as urbanization progressed rapidly in the 1970s, the lifestyle of farming and preparing your own food became quickly replaced with buying food in the city markets. In the 1990s, cars were widely supplied, and the advent of the Internet. The IT industry has developed significantly, and automation using artificial intelligence took over. In the last 100 years, the frequency or radius of human body movement has been drastically reduced to an unprecedented level in history. Even more so due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the radius of our body movement has once again been greatly reduced.

Humans were constantly in motion and evolved to move about.

Since the pandemic, the fitness industry which has encouraged humans to move even in artificial conditions, underwent a major change. Once it was impossible to go to the fitness center, online classes increased, and the demand for indoor fitness equipment surged, such as the indoor bicycle(Peloton being the major brand), dumbbell and kettlebell. Then many people went outdoors and started walking or running in the open. As such, the biggest changes in the fitness trend since the pandemic has been the increase in body weight training which makes the most of one’s own weight, and the increase in outdoor activities. Experts commented that the pandemic actually helped people rediscover how to naturally move and exercise in their daily surroundings, which probably won’t go away soon.

Among these changes, movement training that emphasizes the maneuver of the body is emerging as a new trend. It seems to be literally a big flow rather than an integrated genre, in the likes of Calisthenics exercises using one’s own body weight, yoga and oriental practices that incorporate basic movements with breathing, energy flow, and mental training. Animal Flow encourages you to train anywhere without any equipment using 6 basic movements(The Six Components); MovNat trains the body and mind by moving in nature; Primal Move seeks to balance the body and mind through infant-like moves and fun movements like playing a game; the Feldenkrais Method focuses on training flexibility and body coordination through smooth movements; Five Mimic-animal Boxing mimics the movements of the tiger, deer, bear, monkey, and bird based on the Oriental bionic-physical and breathing exercises; Ginastica Natural was created by combining stretching and breathing methods of Hatha Yoga; Evolve Move Play is an outdoor exercise program that combines elements of parkour, martial arts, capoeira, gymnastics, dance; the Ido Portal method was developed by Portal who trained capoeira for 15 years and then traveled around the world to learn various martial arts, dance, circus, to study nutrition, anatomy, physiology, psychology. Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art that was developed in the 16th century by black slaves in Brazil, incorporating dance, acrobatics, and music.

All these exercise methods, which seem to follow different philosophies and methodologies, have in common the use of body weight for exercise without special equipments. They focus on functional movements that help our daily movement, and value flexibility, coordination, strength, endurance, and the fluidity between movement. You can exercise in your daily space or in nature, not in a specific place such as a gym or fitness center. Above all, the important belief underlying these training methods is that humans are animals designed to move about, that proper human movement must be restored, and mental and physical health are not two different things.

The supporters of movement training also have another common method which is to start with the old moves, what we already know, and then go further, rather than looking for a new method. Kim Hee-jae, CEO of Movement Korea, who learned in Israel the exercise method directly from Ido Portal, says: “If the wheel already exists, do we need to reinvent it? The important thing is to know how to properly utilize what you already have. For example, everyone thinks they know how to do push-ups, but few people do it correctly. Doing push-ups properly means not just performing the movement, but being able to bear your own weight in any kind of situation, be it standing on your hand or battling your opponent.”

The newest can be discovered in looking at the oldest. The reforms of the Renaissance sprang from the quest for the classics, and the first human inventions emerged from the civilizations where the humanities flourished. The ancient Greeks considered physical and mental health as one, and exercise to keep both body and mind healthy was not a lifestyle choice, but a civic duty. At that time, physical training depended on extensive knowledge of biology, physiology, and physics, which eventually led to the world of philosophy and politics. It is moving to look at them doing these movements: the way that they move, how a newborn baby moves using its core, how a person moves sensing the terrain as an animal moves in nature, the way they train themselves like the Greeks with their bare bodies all day long, the way the discipline of both mind-body and spirit is handed down in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra. It is as if I feel my blood warming when faced with our origin.
