The first time I traveled to Casa Malaparte was by way of Jean-Luc Godard’s film\u00a0Contempt <\/i>(1963), starring Brigitte Bardot, Jack Palance, and Fritz Lang, playing himself. This was shortly after, as a college student in the late 1960s, I had learned about Godard and began seeing every movie of his that I could.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\"\"\n\t

Set on a steep cliff overlooking the Mediterranean on the island of Capri, the distinctive features of Casa Malaparte\u2500with its reverse pyramidal stairs leading to the patio roof\u2500play a prominent role in Contempt. In one scene, after entering the expansive living room, Bardot and Palance squat down and look through a window that is set in the back of the fireplace. I know of no other house that has this particular detail, which allows someone to gaze at the Mediterranean through crackling flames.<\/p>\n

More than forty years later, I was able to visit the actual Casa Malaparte. The occasion was a one-day exhibition of paintings and drawings by Brice Marden, which was installed in the living room around the grand fireplace, with its long chestnut mantle and window to the sea. It was while I was sitting at the far end of the room, amid the same memorable pieces of furniture I first saw in Contempt, that I unexpectedly remembered a page from Marden’s book of notes and drawings, Suicide Notes (1974). The page had to do with Godard’s Alphaville (1965), a black-and-white film staring Eddie Constantine and Anna Karenina. I recalled, if my memory is to be trusted, that there was something about the light and dark in a scene, and about Karenina standing in the shadows, that inspired Marden to make a drawing.<\/p>\n

Sitting in a room that I knew from a film, suspended between Godard-inflected memories and the actual place, served as the perfect prelude for thinking about Marden’s work. The sources of his painting, drawings, prints, and stage sets are likewise rooted in intense engagements with the real world\u2500engagements that include movies, poems, art of all periods, scholar’s rocks, olive groves in Greece, seashells known as volutes, ancient Chinese Ru ware, and glasses of lemonade and Coca Cola sitting beside each other on a summer table\u2500and they are nothing if not unpredictable.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\"\"\n\t

Known for his mastery of materials, processes, and techniques, Marden seamlessly merges two divergent possibilities: the hermit’s devotion to ascetic purity and the hedonist’s commitment to earthy sensuality. The stress generated by these conflicting compulsions, pulling tightly in opposite directions, breathes a deeply felt, meditative stillness into the work. By embracing both urges, Marden has transformed two very different tendencies in Abstract Expressionism\u2500the structural rigor and optical delicacy of Agnes Martin versus the unpremeditated gesture and material liquidity of Jackson Pollock\u2500into something that is recognizably his, which is to say that his work neither looks backward nor indulges in nostalgia. Building upon this conjunction further, I would claim that, through his commitment to drawing and his physical engagement with the work’s surface, Marden has wedded Martin’s scrupulous structuring of evanescent light with Pollock’s physical presence in the work. As Marden’s career has proven over time, those who concluded that the work of Martin and Pollock represented end points in painting were clearly wrong.<\/p>\n

\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSince his first show at Bykert Gallery, New York, in 1966, and spanning more than fifty years, Marden has developed, refined, and expanded meticulously intricate approaches to painting and drawing. The eleven works he showed at Casa Malaparte evidenced some of the unexpected directions he has taken in recent years\u2500from monochrome surfaces bordered by drips to labyrinthine networks of improvised lines\u2500all of which are guided by drawing(the movement of the hand across a measured surface). The titles of Marden’s works suggest that specific locales (the Greek island of Santorini and the city of Marrakech) and elusive colors (terre verte) were among his chief inspirations. The connection that these inspirations share with drawing is that each is a form of direct experience that transports the artist to the brink of a complex domain, where it is necessary to see with more than one’s eyes.\n

In a conversation with the artist Matt Connors in June 2015, Marden pointed out: “In the Renaissance they always started paintings with terre verte.”\u00a0Was the reason they used terre verte purely formal? Or are there other reasons to consider? According to the art historian Paul Hills, Marden saw this color when “he visited Pompeii in 1978 – as it constitutes the planes of the floor beneath the fields of red that dominate the walls.”\u00a0Marden’s interest in the history of terre verte removes it from the realm of the purely formal, thereby setting his use of it apart from the Minimalist drive towards the essential and irreducible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/section>\n

\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMarden’s exploration of terre verte dates back to his first visit to Greece in 1971. That trip resulted in a series of paintings and drawings collectively titled “Grove Group,” which he worked on at different points throughout the 1970s. As the title suggests, Greek olive groves were the inspiration. “Grove Group” was done during the period in which Marden was known for his paintings made from monochrome encaustic. In the mid-1980s, he stopped working in waxy monochrome and began drawing a calligraphic line atop a thinner medium. In 2007, alongside his calligraphic paintings, Marden returned to monochrome in\u00a0Ru Ware Project<\/i>\u00a0(2007-2012), a group of nine paintings, each measuring 24 by 18 inches, which he started after he saw an exhibition of ancient Chinese ceramics in Taipei. In his essay about these paintings, the art historian David Anfam wrote:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/section>\n\t

The soft hazy color is hard to describe, drifting as it does between\u00a0pale gray and blue. Once typified as ‘the color of the sky after rain,’\u00a0if Ru ware did not exist, it would have to be invented as the\u00a0objective correlative to the famous in-between tonalities that\u00a0Marden favors.<\/p>\n\t

In 2012, after completing Ru Ware Project, he began Eastern Moss (2012-2015), another series of nine monochromatic paintings that in total measured 24 by 162 inches. Each modestly scaled panel(measuring 24 by 18 inches) was a brownish hue of terre verte that differed subtly from those adjacent to it. However, in contrast to Ru Ware Project, with its tight, ceramic-like skin of indefinable color, the paint is applied in a thinner viscosity, allowing faint traces of the linen’s nub to peer through, particularly along the edges where the panels abut. Meanwhile, the autumnal colors reminded me of the moss that grows around tree trunks.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\"Ru\n\t\t\t\t\"Eastern\n\t

\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAre we to read the rubbed, seemingly eroded surface of these paintings as evidence of time’s constant pressure, or as vestiges of the artist’s gentle caress, or perhaps as proof of his pursuit of elusive color and light? And what associations do these brown-green colors trigger in the viewer? While\u00a0Eastern Moss<\/i>\u00a0is open to interpretation, both the hues and the application of paint are somber confirmations of the way Marden has shaped his passage in time. While elusive and largely indefinable, the state of complex feeling that\u00a0Eastern Moss<\/i>\u00a0evokes is very different from the one found in\u00a0Ru Ware Project.<\/i>\u00a0And yet, for all of its solemnity,\u00a0the pleasure of applying color manifests itself in the subtle differences among the panels. There is nothing mechanical or rote in what the artist has done.\n

In 2017, in addition to\u00a0Eastern Moss<\/i>, Marden showed ten identically sized monochromatic paintings measuring 96 1\/16 by 72 inches at Gagosian in London(October 4 – December 22, 2017). Each panel was painted in a commercially available brand of artist-grade terre verte and titled after the company that manufactured it. A thin wash of the color was initially applied over the entire surface; a square was then measured off, tightly filling the upper part of the rectangular format, while leaving a wide band running along the bottom.<\/p>\n

In each of the ten paintings, Marden applied matching layers of terre verte to the square, working until he achieved a density of color and light that satisfied him. Thin rivulets of color ran down from the square’s bottom edge into the band below, like frayed, unraveling threads. The drips reveal that Marden’s control was consciously limited to the square, and that he had deliberately relinquished his ability to determine what happened in the band. For Marden to have surrendered his well-known penchant for exactitude and control is no small thing. It amounts to an admission of how little power one has over one’s own life. He is in command of what happens inside the square – a form not found in nature – but not of what happens outside it.<\/p>\n

Marden returned to variations on terre verte in the ten-part painting,\u00a0Summation\u00a0<\/i>(2018), which was shown at Casa Malaparte. Each panel measures 24 by 18 inches, the same dimensions the artist used in\u00a0Ru Ware Project<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0Eastern Moss<\/i>. Compositionally, they follow the same proportion as the large terre verte paintings – a square of color above a wide band.\u00a0 Rivulets and drips maculate each of the bands. The scale of\u00a0Summation<\/i>\u00a0enabled Marden to bring the ten terre verte colors together and see them side by side. At the same time, the surface and drips distinguish\u00a0Summation\u00a0<\/i>from both\u00a0Eastern Moss<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0Ru Ware Project<\/i>.<\/p>\n

By making paintings in which control and the lack thereof coexist in constant tension, Marden has entered a different phase of his career. In\u00a0Red Painting<\/i>,\u00a0Black Painting<\/i>, and\u00a0Green Painting<\/i>\u00a0(all dated 2017 and measuring 24 1\/16 by 18 1\/16 inches), Marden returns to the format of a square above a wide band. As in\u00a0Summation<\/i>, he paints the ground with a thin wash of terre verte, but in these works, Marden covers the upper square with translucent layers of black, red, or green. I cannot help but wonder if the artist had Cimabue’s\u00a0Crucifix<\/i>\u00a0in mind. What does his application of red over terre verte stir up in us? How might we read the red drips hanging down from the bottom edge? Are they rivulets of blood or paint or both? What associations does his use of black and green stir up in us? By designating the band as the recipient of the drips and splashes, Marden recognizes the limits of his control, the incompleteness of his knowledge, and the feelings of frailty that haunts him, even as he celebrates living in time and the ineffable pleasures that paint and color bring him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/section>\n

\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe artist’s sensitivity to light and color suffuses the network of lines and marks in the paintings\u00a0Santorini 1<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0Santorini 2<\/i>\u00a0(both 2010-2018), which are further evidence that the pleasure of drawing and the shaping of time are central to Marden’s entire project. The gray bands along the bottom of both paintings, marked by the drips of colors he has used in the square above, call to the mind the eponymous Greek island’s steep volcanic cliffs, while the green in\u00a0Santorini 2\u00a0<\/i>might remind us of\u00a0the presence of the mineral olivine in the island’s soil. The entangled lines – some dense and others ghostly – drift between definition and dissolution.\u00a0 They evoke a precarious state that becomes all the more acute with age.\n

Beginning with\u00a0Eastern Moss<\/i>, Marden has entered the late phase of his career by reaching for ever deeper depths of feeling. One of the more striking things about the recent works – in this case the five numbered\u00a0Marrakech<\/i>\u00a0drawings dated 2017-2018 – is the artist’s determination to continue a line even as the medium creating it empties out, fading almost into invisibility. Look at the dance of damask pink and green lines, and how the color bleeds into the paper. See where the line becomes porous or seems to vanish. In letting those marks stand, Marden recognizes both the pleasure of intangible sensations and the need to let go. Jean Luc-Godard has said, “Cinema is not a series of abstract ideas, but rather the phrasing of moments.”\u00a0The moments Marden places before us are vulnerable and heartbreaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\"\"\n\t
