CLUMSY'S COMMENT

This furnace functioned both as an embers storage facility and a portable stove. The types of furnaces include soil-based “jilhwaryo” and the pottery-style baked “sagihwaryo”, and appeared in various shapes depending on the region and circumstances in which people lived, such as the iron “swehwaryo” or “baekdonghwaryo” used in wealthy households. Stone furnaces made by cutting and trimming stones were said to have been used by ordinary people. The “gopdol” furnace was regarded as the best of the “dolburos”, because of its meticulous organization and excellent heat preservation rate. A skilled craftsman carefully removed its insides, turned the rim, and made its handles and feet. After perilla oil is applied, the gopdol was baked for a day, and finally lacquered to finish. It is a larger size among its kind, and it is likely to have been used in aristocrats’ homes.

It was used to heat water for tea in kettles, or for thermal insulation in bedrooms of the gentry.

*can be used for actual furnace purposes.
